SG117T-JAN: Application Field and Working Principle

Linear voltage regulators are one type of power management integrated circuit (PMIC) that is employed to provide a stable output voltage over widely varying input voltage and load conditions.

The SG117T-JAN is an extremely versatile linear regulator used across a broad range of applications. This drop-in voltage regulator offers up to 5.5V output at 2A with an operating voltage range of 2V to 17V and output voltages as low as 2V. The SG117T-JAN works with either ceramic or tantalum capacitors. It also has a low standby current of 10μA. Suitable application fields include computers, cell phones, audio products, and digital cameras.

The working principle of the SG117T-JAN is simple. The integrated circuit (IC) has two power pins – one for the input voltage and one for the output voltage. A voltage-regulating circuit is responsible for detecting the output voltage and comparing it to an internal voltage reference. If an error is detected, the circuit either increases or decreases the base current supplied to the pass transistor to maintain the regulated output voltage.

The chip also includes a built-in protection circuit that is activated during over-voltage, over-temperature, or over-load conditions. The protection circuit shuts down the output and cuts the supply to the regulator, preventing any further damage. The SG117T-JAN also offers short-circuit protection, over-voltage shutdown, and frequency compensation which is adjustable via an external resistor.
