Inrush Current Limiters (ICL) are devices commonly used in power supply circuits to minimize the maximum inrush current by controlling the energizing current for the whole system; one of these devices is the SG332 series produced by Mean Well. This series is the high-performance solenoid-type inrush current limiter, designed for power supply/SMPS application, and is characterized by its rapid and consistent response.

Application Field and Working Principle

SG332 series has wide application in various fields. It is usually used in medical products, measuring instruments, LED lighting pieces, computer peripheral equipment, household appliances, and security access control etc. In order to better understand its principles, let’s take a closer look at how the SG332 series ICL works.

Basically, when the main power source is off, the SG332 inrush current limiter senses the voltage changes and creates an electromagnetic tension. When the voltage rises above the recommended range, the tension of the electromagnetic field reaches the released point and the core tube increases immediately. This enlarged core tube brings down the energizing current. The decrease of energizing current is the key for reducing inrush current to a certain level, and the overall voltage feedback threshold is also amended.

Moreover, this entire process is fully automatic. The electromagnetic tension is measured and monitored by temperature sensitive devices, so that it doesn’t cause damages to the equipment by overheating. This SG332 series is usually in place to achieve a more steady system stability.

Due to SG332’s various advantages, such as its fast and efficient response, embedded protection elements, wide power input range, high current tolerance and so on, it is broadly applied. Besides, this series is designed to be small and lightweight, so that it can be easily integrated into any applications.
