Inrush current limiters (ICLs) provide a means for limiting the current spike that can occur when power is applied and can help protect downstream components from damage. The SG355 in particular is an analog Controlled Inrush Current Limiter (CICL) with a set of features specifically designed for high-reliability, high-performance application fields. The SG355’s feature set includes an accuracy of up to ±25mV of for controlled current setting, an ultra low-noise switch design, and low impedance control. It also features a fast, smooth response to reduce thermal stress, and is capable of withstanding up to 350v of reverse voltage. Its wide operating voltage range (2.2-32V) and high current (0.01-100A) rating make it suitable for controlling current in many applications, ranging from consumer electronics and telecoms to industrial and automotive applications. One of the primary benefits of the SG355 series of CICLs is that they provide precise control over inrush current levels. By accurately setting the current, the SG355 limits the amount of current drawn into the system during power up, thus protecting downstream components from being damaged. It also reduces the thermal stress on the components by providing an even current draw, reducing the need to oversize components and components intended to provide surge protection.The smooth accurate control of the SG355 is achieved thanks to working principle of the design. The SG355 uses a digital hysteretic control loop to achieve the precise current control. In the simplest terms, the SG355 comprises of an input voltage and load resistor connected together in order to set the current level, a rectifier and filter to smooth out the incoming voltage, and a power semiconductor switch (MOSFET) to control the current level. This MOSFET is the core component of the design, and it is controlled by a hysteretic control loop. The hysteretic control loop works by receiving a reference voltage as an input and uses the voltage to compare against the current level of the system. A fixed offset voltage is then added or subtracted from the reference voltage based on this comparison, and the MOSFET is switched accordingly to adjust the current level to match the reference voltage. This is a highly efficient method of controlling current with minimal electromagnetic noise, as the switching is done using a digital hysteretic control loop instead of an analog based system. Additionally, this control allows for the setting of precise current levels with an accuracy of up to ±25mV of controlled current setting. The SG355 inrush current limiter is capable of a wide range of applications thanks to its feature set and highly precise control. Its wide operating voltage range and high current ratings make it suitable for controlling current in many applications, including consumer electronics and telecoms, industrial and automotive applications.
