SG3843DM Application Field and Working Principle

SG3843DM is a member of the PMIC – Voltage Regulators – DC DC Switching Controllers family of integrated power solutions designed to provide excellent performance and low power consumption in integrated solutions. This device operates with a wide input range of 8.0V ~ 15.0V and is capable of delivering up to 400mA load current. In addition, its built-in high side and low side voltage detectors provide overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent protection.The SG3843DM integrates high performance voltage mode PWM control and a Power Good (PGOOD) output signal. It provides low on-state resistance and high efficiency operation with both symmetrical and asymmetrical load current. The device requires very few external components for quick and easy design, making it an attractive solution for many lower power high performance applications.The SG3843DM can be used in a variety of applications such as, automotive, medical, industrial, computing and consumer electronics. Its wide operating temperature range (-40 degree Celsius to +85 degree Celsius) along with high output voltage accuracy, robust protection and small form factor make it a suitable choice for these environments.

SG3843DM Working Principle

The SG3843DM works on the principle of voltage mode PWM control to maintain stable output voltage. It is based on the classical triangle wave oscillator topology, which generates a triangle wave with a constant frequency, fSW. A voltage feed-forward block is used to compare the output voltage with the reference voltage. When the output voltage matches the reference voltage, the comparator output turns off and the oscillator runs freely. When the output voltage drops below the reference voltage, the comparator output turns on and the oscillator period reduces and the output voltage ramps up again until it matches the reference voltage again. The rising edge of the comparator output signal is used to turn on the power switch. As the output voltage increases, the power switch turns off gradually, as set by the current-limiting resistor, until the output voltage matches the reference voltage again.The P-channel power MOSFET is used as the low side power device and the N-channel MOSFET is used as the high side power device. The SG3843DM has built-in voltage and current limit, undervoltage lockout, overvoltage protection and two high side (HS) and low side (LS) voltage detectors. The device also has an internal temperature monitor circuit to provide over temperature shutdown, protection and to maintain long term reliability. Additionally, the PGOOD output provides DC/DC converter status, as well as overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent conditions.The SG3843DM provides excellent performance in applications requiring high efficiency, high accuracy and low power consumption, such as automotive, medical, industrial, computing and consumer electronics. The device offers a wide operating temperature range, robust protection, low output noise and small form factor. It can provide a high level of performance with very few external components and is therefore an attractive solution for these applications.
