In its simplest form, a sensor acts as a device that detects a change in its environment and then converts the change into a measurable form. Working Principle:
The SI7051-EVB utilizes the same capacitive sensing technology used in most humidity sensors today. The sensor utilizes two plates – one insulated and one exposed – that act as a capacitor. When humidity – or water vapor – withdraws from the air, the air molecules attach to the exposed plate and the resistance between the two plates increases. When the humidity increases, the reverse happens, and the resistance decreases. The resistance between the plates is proportional to the amount of humidity in the air.
The sensor measures the capacitance between the two plates, which is then converted into a digital humidity signal. This signal is then fed to the processor chip, which converts the signal into a trend line. This trend line will allow the user to determine the level of humidity in the environment – expressed as a %RH.
The SI7051-EVB also features an on-board thermistor that can measure ambient temperature, and the chip also calculates the temperature coefficient of relative humidity (TCR) in order to correct for temperature variation. The TCR is an important part of the sensor, because it allows the user to quickly identify changes in the environment’s relative humidity due to temperature variation.
Overall, the SI7051-EVB is a powerful and reliable humidity sensor that features plenty of capabilities for a wide range of applications.
