Off-line SMPS designs of both DC/DC and AC/DC type require various control techniques to obtain maximum efficiency and optimize performance. The application fields for such techniques are diverse and evolve constantly. Therefore, it’s critical for the product engineer to maintain a high level of technical agility. The SIC403DB Evaluation Board is an excellent way to facilitate this. The SIC403DB board is a complete DC/DC “power design in a box” featuring an integrated award winning 3-phase buck controller/MOSFET driver and buck stage. It provides the controls engineer with a comprehensive design tool for “transformer less”, off-line switch mode power supplies.
The SIC403DB contains an array of components specifically chosen to enable a wide range of topologies and their specific variations. This facilitates a comprehensive and efficient design process for a variety of power requirements. The main components of the board include the SiC403 Buck controller/MCU; the three power MOSFETs isolated by an optical coupler, peak current detection, analog switches, a sync FET, over-voltage protection, timing components, a PWM network, and more.
The SiC403 main function is to control the power conversion, making sure that both the input and output power signals are in phase. The MCU can configure the phase of the input signal, allowing the SIC403DB to respond to different input waveforms. It also allows the MCU to adjust the output power delivered to the load by adjusting the duty cycle of the MOSFETs. This insures the appropriate load current is delivered and the maximum efficiency is achieved.
The SIC403DB Evaluation Board also features a variety of protection mechanisms, such as an active over-voltage protection, thermal protection, EMI filtering, and peak current extraction.
