Diodes are often used as rectifiers to convert alternating current (AC) to pulsating direct current (DC). A single diode may be used, as in a Half Wave Rectifier (HWR), or three diodes may be used together, known as a Centered Bridge Rectifier (CBR). Each of these configurations, along with the popular diode bridge rectifier (DBR) are discussed in more detail below.The SJPE-H3VR is a single junction, 3-amp, 200V, 600µA rectifier diode from a range of high-performance diodes from the Sanken family. Constructed from silicon epitaxial, the device is designed for switching, rectifying, junction protector, and static clamp applications.When connected in a circuit, the forward bias applied to the two leads (anode and cathode) creates a potential difference across the diode, which allows the electrons to flow through and cause conduction in one direction only. This helps to regulate the level of current flowing in a circuit, converting AC to DC and providing reverse polarity protection. Here, the diode junction is referred to as “blocking".The SJPE-H3VR is ideal for applications in pulsed load, polarity protection, and transient suppression. Further, due to its ability to handle the large power bursts, long-term surge and head terminals can be safely clamped without fusing.In reverse bias, that is if the voltage level on the anode is higher than the voltage level on the cathode, the diode will remain blocked and no current will flow. This is because the backward pressure on the potential barrier causes avalanches of electrons to be generated, consuming and dissipating the surplus current.When a bridge rectifier is used, diodes are connected together in a “ladder” configuration. The two diodes on each side of the bridge provide the two phases of the AC current with the other two crossing over, to ensure that the resulting voltage is always positive in one lead with the other lead at a negative voltage. The SJPE-H3VR can also be used in this configuration, ensuring fast switching speeds and negligible levels of reverse recovery charge.The SJPE-H3VR rectifier offers convenience, precision and reliability for a variety of applications. By connecting the SJPE-H3VR in either a full-wave bridge or center tapped bridge rectifier, the surplus current can be regulated and limited to the desired level, helping to protect other components from damage.
