Introduction

The SJPZ-N18V is a Zener diode, which plays a key role in the regulating circuit of a device or system, providing suppression of inductive noise, protection from surplus voltages, and limiting of harmful stray voltages. Zener diodes are a type of diode which allows current to flow in the forward direction, like a normal diode, but also permits it to flow in the reverse direction when the voltage is above a certain value, known as the breakdown voltage; this umping action is also known as avalanche breakdown, and the reverse breakdown voltage is known as the Zener voltage.

Working Principle

The Zener diode, unlike regular Germanium or Silicon diodes, is purposely designed to have a much lower ‘reverse breakdown voltage’. Put simply, this means that when the reverse voltage applied to the diode is increased to the diode\'s Zener voltage (Vz or Vzk) level, the diode does not breakdown conventionally. Instead, it creates a distinct ‘Zener breakdown’ as electrons within a narrow, high-field bridge or active region of the PN junction jump the junction barrier and become stable within this region. This is known as a Zener effect.This provides the SJPZ-N18V Zener diode with the ability to operate in both the forward and reverse directions. The Zener diode itself, which is nothing more than a regular PN junction diode, is connected in the reverse direction, with the anode connected to the positive supply and the cathode, the lower voltage connected to the negative supply.When the voltage applied to the anode is greater than the Zener voltage, Vz, the diode no longer acts as a regular diode. Instead, it has a fixed resistance between its anode and cathode and works as a voltage regulator. This is because the Zener diode operates like a switch, allowing current to flow through it in one direction (Anode to Cathode) when the voltage applied to the anode is less than the Zener voltage and blocking current when the applied voltage is greater than the Zener voltage.

Application field

The SJPZ-N18V Zener diode can be used in a wide-variety of applications, from power supplies and logic gates, to reverse polarity protection and voltage regulation. In power supplies, a Zener diode may be used as a voltage regulator; for example, for precise voltage regulation or for current limiting to protect a circuit or component.
