Inrush Current Limiters (ICL)
Inrush current limiting, or adverse current limiting, is an electrical engineering technique which is used to limit and control the flow of current when a device is first powered on. This ensures that the electrical system does not suffer from excessive current draw upon startup, thereby protecting it from potential damages. Inrush current limiters (ICLs) are used to impose this limit automatically.
SL05 5R001 Application Field and Working Principle
The SL05 5R001 is a type of ICL manufactured by Panasonic. It is especially useful for installation in switchboards, electrical panels & other consumer electronics up to 400 volt DC. As a medium power ICL, it can limit the inrush current up to 10 amps. This provides outstanding surge current protection since it is designed with built-in failure-free elements.
The SL05 5R002 is a series of ICLs featuring a unique compensation circuit. The compensation circuit senses the rise of the inrush current and correlates it with the temperature of the electronics, allowing the circuits to accurately limit the current level even if the temperature is constantly changing. This allows for precise current protection during startup.
The working principle of the SL05 5R001 ICL is relatively simple. It is designed essentially as a resistor - when current flow exceeds the threshold value, the resistor quickly exhausts the energy, rapidly reducing the inrush current to a safe level. During normal operation the resistor quickly charges up, so that it is ready to provide protection again upon the next switching cycle.
At the heart of the ICL is an NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor - which essentially acts as a sensory element. This element senses a surge of current as it begins to flow and, based on the characteristics of NTC thermistors, immediately starts to act as a resistor. Using this element allows the inrush current to be detected and limited quickly and reliably, ensuring full circuit protection.
The SL05 5R001 ICL is a good choice if you want to limit the inrush current during startup.
