SL15T1 application field and working principle

TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are widely used in various electronic circuits to protect against high voltage transients. SL15T1 is a type of unidirectional transient voltage suppressors which have low parasitic capacitance and fast response time. It mainly finds its application in TVS Diode arrays, AC/DC power supply systems, and various consumer electronics for transient protection.

SL15T1 is basically a thyristor and it consists of three layers of P-N junction. A P layer, an N layer and a gate layer. It is designed to suppress the transient voltage and limit the maximum voltage to withstands. Its primary function is to clamp the transient voltage and prevent it from reaching the components attached to it. This prevents any kind of damage caused to the component by the transient voltage.

It operates in two modes - the trigation and the recovery mode. During the trigger mode, the SL15T1 will be triggered when the input voltage reaches its specific trip point. When this happens, the diode will be triggered and will start releasing its stored energy in the form of current and voltage at steady state. This will result in a short circuit-like condition which helps to suppress the voltage transient. On the other hand, during the recovery mode, the SL15T1 will act like a diode and start to conduct current in the opposite direction. This will help to restore the voltage and current to its previous normal levels.

SL15T1 diodes have various other features like low on-state leakage, very fast response time, very low spread capacitance, and very low thermal resistance. These makes is very suitable for high voltage transient voltage suppression applications.
