SL5501SD Working Principle

The SL5501SD consists of two parts: a light emitting diode (LED) on one side and a bi-directional high-speed voltage comparator on the other. When the LED is energized, it emits light which is detected by the comparator. This causes the comparator to switch its output ON or OFF depending on the polarity of the input current. When the LED is off, the comparator switches to a low impedance state and maintains its output in the OFF state.

The optoisolator is designed for isolating medium to high power control signals. It features an excellent isolation voltage of 5,500 Vrms and it operates over a wide temperature range of -40 to 105 °C. The open-collector output is capable of sourcing or sinking a maximum of 50mA. The collect-emitter voltage is 40V and the power dissipation is 5W.
