Working Principle

This technology is similar to that used in Zener diode technology, but with an optimized reverse avalanche breakdown voltage, which provides better over-current protection and lower clamping losses when compared to other TVS diodes.The SLD24-18-B consists of an anode and a cathode, with a PN junction formed between them. The PN junction has a voltage rating of 24V, which is the maximum voltage that the device can withstand without breaking down. When an electrical surge occurs, the PN junction conducts current until its voltage reaches its breakdown voltage (24V). When the voltage reaches this level, the diode conducts an avalanche of current that is able to handle the surge within an extremely short time.When the voltage is clamped to a safe level, the device then starts to shut-off the current and return to it normal state. This process is repeated each time an over-voltage event occurs, protecting the device and its components from damage.
