Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also called electrolytic capacitors, are a type of capacitor that uses an aluminum foil as its anode, covered by a chemically etched oxide layer protected by a liquid or solid electrolyte. With its higher capacitance, good frequency response, low cost, and small size, aluminum electrolytic capacitors have become popular components in a wide variety of electric circuits and are used in a vast number of electronic and electrical equipment.

The SLPX271M385E5P3 is a type of aluminum electrolytic capacitor designed with a 10 µF to 470 µF capacitance range, 560 VDC voltage rating, and 85°C maximum operating temperature. This type of capacitor is most commonly used in applications such as AC/DC power supplies, UPS, electric drives, air conditioners, elevators, and solar power systems.

The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor can be broken down into three basic components - the anode, the dielectric, and the electrolyte. The anode of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is made from aluminum foil, which is etched with a pattern of microscopic holes. In the Dielectric layer, the electrolyte is absorbed by the etching into the holes and between aluminum particles. The presence of the electrolyte and the high electric field that builds up across the thin dielectric layer results in extremely high capacitance values from microfarads to hundreds of microfarads.

The third component of the electrolytic capacitor is the electrolyte, which is usually a mixture of water, glycol, and other impurities. The electrolyte serves to transfer ions from the anode to the dielectric layer and vice versa. This provides the necessary charge redistribution and capacitance needed for the capacitors to function.

When the capacitor is subject to a direct current, the electrolyte moves electrons from the anode to the dielectric layer, this causes a build-up of positive charge on the anode and a build-up of negative charge on the dielectric layer. This is how the capacitor stores energy and produces its effect on electric circuits.
