The SM1612E3/TR13 is a bi-directional TVS Diode which is designed to protect electronic circuits from voltage transients induced by lightning as well as other transient voltage events, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Working principle

It uses avalanche breakdown technology which is able to quickly and efficiently dissipate high voltage surges. When a high voltage surge enters the diode, the energy is absorbed and it creates a large electric field near the PN-junction, resulting in a high flow of current. This causes the diode to flip from OFF to ON state, allowing this energy to be dissipated and protecting the downstream circuit.

Due to its low capacitance of 3pF, the SM1612E3/TR13 does not interfere with the data signals in high-speed digital networks, up to 400Mbps. While in OFF mode, it supports a peak reverse voltage of 200V. The SM1612E3/TR13 is manufactured in a variety of package types and is compatible with both commercial and automotive temperature range.

The SM1612E3/TR13 is also tested for international standards such as IEC 61000-4-2 (level 4), MIL-STD-883 method 3015.7, and ESDA specifications S5.1 and S5.3.

The SM1612E3/TR13 is an excellent solution for protection circuits from VCESD and GR-1089 surges. It is available in surface-mount and through-hole packages, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. The SM1612E3/TR13 has low capacitance, making it ideal for high-speed digital network applications up to 400Mbps.
