TVS - Diodes: SM5S30HE3/2D Application Field and Working Principle
TVS – Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes) are widely used in the field of radio electronics to help protect against voltage transients and surges. The SM5S30HE3/2D is a Schottky barrier type unidirectional TVS diode which provides excellent DC performance. This diode is capable of minimizing the effects of surges, over-voltage, and power surges against a wide variety of electronic components.The working principle of the SM5S30HE3/2D includes a Schottky barrier junction which reduces the forward voltage drop due to low impact ionization, providing low conduction loss and low thermal resistance for improved thermal efficiency. The Schottky barrier junction also prevents the reverse current from flowing back to the supply line, thus providing a higher breakdown voltage rating. The "Dynamic resistance" parameter rated at 0.03 Ohm from -50 to +125 C, results in a fast protection response over a wide range of temperatures due to its low junction capacitance and fast switching capabilities.The SM5S30HE3/2D device has a maximum allowable peak pulse power dissipation of 250 W and a forward current rating of 30 Amps @25 C making it suitable for high-reliability applications such as telecom equipments, AC & DC power supplies, electronic circuits, consumer IT, Electro-mechanical controls, industrial and medical equipments, automotive electronics, and more. Additionally, its low reverse leakage current of 0.5µA, minimum operating voltage of 5V, and reverse standoff voltage (Vbr) rating of 25V, makes it ideal for use in applications which require high levels of transient protection.The SM5S30HE3/2D also integrates two lead free packages: SMAJ30CA (3.25x2.2mm) and SOD-17CA (4.8x2.8x1.5mm). These packages provide a low thermal resistance, allowing for easy implementation into high power applications. The device is available with JEDEC standard RoHS compliant MSL ratings (Moisture Sensitivity Levels) of 2, 4, and 6.In conclusion, the SM5S30HE3/2D is an ideal choice for Transient Voltage Suppression applications due to its low forward voltage drop, fast switching capabilities, reverse current protection, and small form factor.
