Working Principle
The SM6S22AHE3/2D is a bidirectional TVS diode that consists of two discrete chips connected in series to form a single rectifier. In normal operation, no current flows through the diode and the voltage across it is zero. When a transient surge, such as a surge from a lightning strike, occurs, the voltage across the diode increases. This increase in voltage causes the current flow through the diode to exceed the maximum allowable rating, thus protecting the system from overvoltage and other damage. The surge current is dissipated by the device and is not returned to the source or system.
The reverse breakdown voltage of a TVS diode is significantly lower than a conventional diode, allowing it to be able to clamp lower voltages efficiently while still handling high peak currents.
