TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) diodes are devices specially designed and used to protect electrical equipment from spikes and transient voltage events such as electrostatic discharge, lightning strike, and line voltage spikes. The SM8LC03/TR7, manufactured by Torex, is an unidirectional TVS diode, designed to protect against high levels of electrostatic discharge (ESD) up to 30kV. The SM8LC03/TR7 is a low capacitance, fast-response diode with a compact package suitable for high-space-density components.
The SM8LC03/TR7 is designed primarily for the protection of circuit components and boards from ESD, RF and other transient events. It is designed to provide a much wider range of protection than traditional diodes, with its range of 30 kV HBM (human body model) and 40 kV ESD (electrostatic discharge). This makes it especially suitable for protecting components from the kinds of transient voltages that could be caused by lightning strikes and power line spikes.
The device itself consists of a pair of silicon diodes inside an insulated plastic package with an exposed metal tab. The external tab allows for direct connection to ground, which helps to further reduce the risk of transient over-voltage events. The device is designed to be driven either in parallel with the load or in shunt across the circuit. In shunt connections, current will flow through the device in both directions when exposed to transient events such as ESD or lightning. In parallel connections, current will flow only in the direction of the applied voltage.
In a typical application, the SM8LC03/TR7 can be driven with either positive or negative voltages, up to the rated voltage of 30 kV HBM and 40 kV ESD. The device has an average power dissipation of 0.5 watts, with a maximum surge current which can withstand up to 500 µs. A peak pulse current of up to 4A can also be handled by the diode.
The device is also relatively small compared to other TVS diodes, with dimensions of 2.6mm x 1.55mm. This allows for high-space-density mounting, making it ideal for use in portable and embedded electronic devices. In addition, its relatively low 0.5 watts of power means that the diode can be safely used in portable applications, as the heat dissipated by the diode will not harm other components or affect the overall performance of the device.
The SM8LC03/TR7 is a versatile, fast-response TVS diode that can provide reliable protection from electrical transients. Its small size, low power dissipation, and wide voltage protection range make it ideally suited for use in portable and embedded electronic devices.
