TVSdiodes (transient voltage protection supplies) are electrical components intended to protect sensitive electronic equipment against damage due to transient overvoltage. These overvoltages may be caused by lightning, inductive loads, or even normal operating conditions. While all of these are possible, the most frequent application for these diodes is lightning protection. The SM8LC24/TR13 is just one example of these types of diodes.
The SM8LC24/TR13 is a bidirectional low-capacitance transient voltage suppressor. It is designed to absorb and limit transients on two signal lines with minimal energy, allowing noise margins to be maintained during stressful operating conditions. It is capable of withstanding repetitive 3 nanosecond pulses of 27 kilovolts energy and protecting up to 25 volts of continuous DC voltage. The device is an ideal overvoltage protector for high speed data buses, such as USB 2.0. In turn, it is especially designed to be compatible with ESD protection requirements.
The SM8LC24/TR13’s operation is simple. When the input transient is greater than the device’s threshold voltage, the voltage across the device will “breakdown” and current will start to flow. At this moment, the device believes the breakdown voltage. The current then uses up the energy of the transient until the voltage across the device no longer exceeds the device’s voltage. The energy of the transient is the device’s “transient limit”.
A key benefit of the SM8LC24/TR13 is its low capacitance. This means that it has the ability to protect high-frequency, high-speed data buses. This is achieved through a special integrated dual diode structure that exhibits low capacitance from one side of the device to ground. As a result, the radiation is minimized, and the device minimizes the amount of EMI (electromagnetic interference) from the system.
The SM8LC24/TR13 is a great solution for reliable ESD protection of high-speed data buses. It is capable of protecting up to 25 volts of continuous DC voltage while providing an ultra-low capacitance of less than .2 picofarads from one end to the other. Its low capacitance allows for fast switching speeds without having to worry about being overloaded.
