The SMAJ18CA-Q TVS Diode is a bidirectional diode specifically developed for the protection of high-speed differential signal pairs. It is designed to protect up to two differential pairs from voltage transients that causes by electrostatic discharge (ESD), lightning and even EMI.

The SMAJ18CA-Q offers an impressive peak pulse power of up to 1500 W (8×20 μs). It has a low capacitance of 1.5 pF, which provides for protected circuits with low capacitive loading. Application Field

SMAJ18CA-Q is designed for carrying Line ESD Protection, low-cost system solutions that meet IEC61000-4-2 (Level 4C) with air-gap discharge, EFT (Burst) protection and surge protection. It may also be used in power-supply lines and interface lines within electronic products as well as communication lines in set-top boxes and modem protection.

Working Principle

The SMAJ18CA-Q offers ESD protection and over-voltage protection for electronic charge within an electronic system. It works like an clamping circuit which provides protection for both negative and positive power rails. It can issue a stable voltage and clamp the over-voltage or current transient accordingly.

When the voltage across a TVS reaches its peak breakdown voltage, electrons will be pushed from the n-type material to the p-type material, resulting in a short circuit. This will bring the voltage on the two sides to a (relatively) picture-perfect stable voltage. It means that the SMAJ18CA-Q can provide protects from over-voltage and current transients for both positive and negative voltage rails.
