Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVSs) - Diodes are widely used in power supply applications, as they protect components from overvoltage, undervoltage, and transients. In particular, the SMAJ20A-QH device is a very popular TVS-Diode, for its excellent transient voltage protection and performance.
The SMAJ20A-QH is used to protect sensitive electronic components from overvoltages, undervoltages, and transients. It features an ultra-low, well-behaved power dissipation curve at both positive and negative going transients and a low capacitance for reduced parasitic effect. The SMAJ20A-QH is an ideal TVS-Diode for applications requiring protection against electrostatic discharge and secondary protection for power and ground return management. It is used in automotive electronics, appliances, personal electronic devices, telecom equipment, and many other systems and applications that require protection against transient voltage surges.
The working principle of the SMAJ20A-QH is based on its Reverse Standoff voltage. The device is specified at +20V for most models, which means that the device will start to conduct at a voltage that is 20V more than its rated Voltage. When an overvoltage is applied, the junction between the diode and its reverse series connection becomes forward biased, allowing it to conduct. At the same time, the avalanche breakdown effect of the junction causes the current to be exponentially higher than the applied voltage. This allows the device to conduct current at a higher voltage, thus dissipating the surge energy.
The SMAJ20A-QH is considered to be an ultra-sensitive device as it offers a low surge current requirement and is able to offer protection against fast transients. Since the device has a lower capacitance, it can provide a higher Numerical Characteristic Impedance (NCI). This in turn reduces the total transmission line losses, allowing the device to provide higher levels of protection at higher transients frequencies, thereby providing better protection to the other components in the system.
