TVS-Diodes are a type of components used to protect the vulnerable electronics from damage due to electrical overstress that arise from the soft failures, (abrupt and transient surge currents). The SMAJ40A M2G Diode is a kind of Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diode. Its application field and working principle will be discussed here.
The SMAJ40A M2G Diode is designed for applications where superior clamping capability or increased surge capacity is required. These include transient overvoltage protection of I/O and LAN, telecom, data, video, and audio equipment. It is a unidirectional device used to protect sensitive components from transients generated by lightning, inductive loads, or other high energy pulses. The Diode will clamp and divert transients away from the sensitive components.
TVS-Diodes generally consists of a two layer silicon structure which can absorb the voltage in each layer, so that the voltage is divided in the two layers. Under normal conditions, the TVS diode looks like a regular diode with a very small forward voltage drop, analogous to the voltage drop of a regular diode. When an overvoltage transient is presented, the breakdown process increases the current, improving the clamping capability.
The SMAJ40A M2G Diode has working voltage limit of 400V. It has a low stand-by current and is designed to provide fast clamping action during transient conditions. This diode has an extremely low dynamic resistance to ensure minimum voltage overshoot during clamping and it provides greater stability for low energy transients. The AVALANCHE type breakdown mechanism is deployed in this diode which increases the clamping ratio with reduced clamping voltage.
The SMAJ40A M2G Diode is provided in a DO-213AC surface mount package with M2G suffix. This diode offers 1500W peak pulse power rating with 10/1000μs waveform. The operating temperature range of the diode is -55°C to 125°C. It has a high thermal and electrical stability, and offers reliably low let-through voltage. It also has excellent current sharing capability with zener controlled pass voltage.
For electrostatic sensitive applications, TVS-Diodes provide an effective solution to ESD protection. The SMAJ40A M2G Diode is very effective in such applications because it has a low clamping voltage that tracks well with the changing electrostatic potential. This helps to ensure that electrostatic events are effectively clamped and not allowed to propagate into sensitive systems.
