TVS - Diodes
Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes protect sensitive equipment from voltage spikes and excessive electrical surges. The SMAJ40A-M3/61 is a surface mount unidirectional TVS diode with a low breakdown voltage of 12.8V. It provides electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection as well as protection from voltage transients caused by lightning storms. The voltage at the PN junction equalizes and a current is passed causing the junction depletion zone to enlarge and begin to conduct. This current conduction creates a very low impedance path and quickly reduces the excess voltage.
Another major benefit of the SMAJ40A-M3/61 is its low capacitance. Its low capacitance prevents any disruption of signal integrity due to the low parasitic capacitance between the source and ground. This low capacitance also enables data rates up to 500 MHz and higher to be used in data line protection.
