The SMAJ530-E3/61 is designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage transients generated by inductive load switching, lighting, and other fast transients. It has a 5.0V breakdown voltage, and an excellent 15A peak pulse current capability. The SMAJ530-E3/61 is RoHS compliant, making it a perfect fit for most industrial applications. In addition, it features an industry standard 5.0V breakdown voltage, excellent clamping capability, and fast response time for protection from overvoltage transients.
The SMAJ530-E3/61 works on the principle of avalanche or zener breakdown. It is designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage transients generated by inductive load switching, lighting, and other fast transients. Avalanche breakdown is a process in which charges flow freely through an n-type semiconductor in which the concentration of charge carriers is extremely high. This creates an electric field so strong that it suppresses electric fields produced by the electrons passing through it. The field creates a cascade of electrons flowing in the direction of the electric field. As the voltage continues to rise, electrons gain energy and create electron/hole pairs through impact ionization, causing a massive avalanche. This avalanche produces a voltage drop that clamps the voltage transient and prevents it from reaching the sensitive component.
Zener breakdown is a process in which electrons migrate through a reverse-biased junction and are attracted to and absorbed by the positively charged metal ions on one side of the junction. This process increases the electric field until the large number of electrons is forced to migrate across the junction, creating a reverse current through the junction and lowering the voltage. Zener breakdown offers fast response and stable operation, and has a long-term usage margin.
