Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes, a category of semiconductors, are designed to protect against electrical overstress (EOS) caused by surges or spikes in voltage. They decrease the rise in voltage and prevent it from exceeding the maximum operating voltage of the system.The SMAJ70CAHE3/61 is a member of the TVS diode family. This device offers 70V of breakdown voltage with a 5% surge current capability of 5.5A. It is compliant to the RoHS Directive and can operate under an operating temperature range up to 150°C.

The SMAJ70CAHE3/61 is mainly used in industrial and commercial applications. It is ideal for protection in control panels, medical equipment, telecommunication systems, LED lighting, computer peripherals and automotive systems. It can also be used to protect automotive ECUs, motor control units, inverter circuits, appliances and other devices that require transient voltage protection.

The SMAJ70CAHE3/61 features low-capacitance ESD protection to reduce signal distortion and simultaneous multi-line protection to protect multiple components from damaging surges. It also features low dynamic resistance which works to protect against transient energy levels. The device has a highly efficient avalanche rating and utilizes a state-of-the-art oxide technology which allows for reverse energy pulsing.

The SMAJ70CAHE3/61 works on the principle of clamping. The device has an internal diode junction which acts as a clamp, limiting the amount of voltage that can pass through the system if a surge or spike occurs. The device uses a two-stage withdrawal design to activate the diode junction and thus protect the system.

The flow of current through the device is also controlled. This is achieved using a plastic seal which is placed around the diode junction in order to stop the current flow until it reaches a certain level. Upon reaching that level, the current then begins to flow through the device allowing it to activate the diode junction in order to clamp voltage levels.

The SMAJ70CAHE3/61 also features an ESD protection. This helps to protect sensitive circuits from damage due to Electrostatic Discharge by providing a low capacitance and low leakage path between the two sides of the device. Such protection works to reduce the chance of damage to the system due to static electricity.
