TVS diodes are electrical components designed to protect equipment against transient voltage, and the SMAJ43A is a standard example. Crowbar ProtectionThe temperature range of the SMAJ43A is -65°C to +150°C and is widely used in higher altitudes and across various industries. It is primarily designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage fluctuations caused by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), induced surges, and lightning strikes, as well as very short duration electrical events. Valence ProtectionValence protection works in a similar way but is an inactive protection feature. This protection feature protects the diode from damage caused by long duration voltage fluctuations. It does this by limiting the amount of current that flows through the diode at any point in time. This is done by placing a current limiter within the diode circuitry, limiting the amount of current that can flow through it to a pre-specified amount. Working PrincipleIn order to understand the working principle of the SMAJ43A diode, it’s important to understand the basic characteristics of the semiconductor diode. A diode is a specialized form of electric current limiting device. It has two main characteristics - forward voltage drop and reverse voltage drop. The forward voltage drop occurs when a diode is connected in a forward direction, while the reverse voltage drop occurs when a diode is connected in a reverse direction. When the SMAJ43A diode is used, the reverse voltage drop of the diode is adjusted such that any over-voltage condition will cause a small reverse current to flow through the diode, thus limiting the voltage to the protected device. The diode also has a clamping action which, in the event of an over-voltage condition, shunts the excess voltage to ground. This prevents the protected device from being exposed to any potentially damaging high voltage.
