The SMB10J10-E3/52 is a unidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) designed for protecting various electronic circuit systems from ESD pulses and overload or short circuit influenced by lightning impulse. It can be widely used in automotive and solar inverters, lightning protection of wires, boards, etc. It is also suitable for protection of in situ tests and CMOS integrated circuits in telecommunications fields.The SMB10J10-E3/52 has an excellent power dissipation capability, high breakdown voltage stability, and very low leakage current across a wide temperature range(-65 ℃ to +150℃). It provides excellent clamping performance and other features such as: • Surge protection: 10A @ 8/20 μs ; • Peak Pulse Power: 400W (10/1000 μs) ;• Withstand peak pulse power for given working voltage @ tp= 10/1000 μs ;• Leakage current: 1.0uA (max) @ VR= 80V (max).Working Principle
The SMB10J10-E3/52 TVS Diode is a unidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) consisting of a silicon avalanche diode and a Zener diode in a single package. It acts as a clamp device and operates within a specified breakdown voltage range, which is the maximum voltage the diode can target the attached device and protect it from higher voltages.The operating principle of the SMB10J10-E3/52 is based on the principle of avalanche breakdown and Zener breakdown. In the case of avalanche breakdown, electrons gain sufficient energy to cause further electron–hole ionization in the channel region and start an avalanche process. The large electric field caused by this rapid increase of the current enables the breakdown voltage to be effectively suppressed. In the case of Zener breakdown, when the applied voltage reaches the breakdown voltage, electrons will be accelerated to considerable speeds by the electric field, enabling them to gain sufficient energy to ionise impurity atoms.The device is designed to provide an effective clamping action on voltages between maximum allowable voltage (at high transient times) generally specified in datasheets, and it clamps safely the value of the voltage during high transients and spikes. As almost all components in electronic circuits have a maximum rated voltage, it is very important to protect them from such transients.Conclusion
