Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVSs) are unidirectional or bidirectional semiconductor devices that minimize the risk of overvoltage potentially damaging an entire circuit or system. In other words, they are essential components designed to absorb transient voltages that surpass the breakdown voltage of the device and provide electrical protection. An example of such a device is the SMBJ10A/54, which is designed around the concept of a diac – a component that opens at a specified breakover voltage, allowing the current flow. It is utlized in overvoltage electrical protection and is highly effective for many application fields, as it can quickly intercept and divert the surge current without suffering any damage.

The SMBJ10A/54 is a bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor Diode (TVS Diode) designed specifically to protect low-voltage/low-power systems. It is composed of two symmetrical series of avalanche diodes that are connected back to back in a common cathode configuration. This device can also be found in the Automotive Protection Package (APP®).

The surge currents that usually affect low-voltage/low-power systems come from inductive and capacitive Ring Wave and EFT sources and have surge current ratings ranging from 5A to 15A. The SMBJ10A/54 is rated for peak surge current of up to 10A, allowing it to effectively intercept and divert the harmful effects of high voltage transients, while not being damaged. By limiting the rate of rise of the pulse, it also helps ensure that no damage is caused to the equipment, even if the transient is high enough to cause device breakdown.

The operating principles behind the SMBJ10A/54 involve it creating an avalanche breakdown voltage of 12.4V when reverse biased, while it can stand up to a Continuous Reverse Voltage of 10V and has an average Forward Current rating of 0.5A. Its Non-repetitive Peak Forward Current rating is 5A at 1.0μs, 10A at 10μs, and 15A at 100μs.

The SMBJ10A/54 is ideal for many application fields, such as in automotive electrical equipment, computers, communication equipment, power supplies, and consumer electronics.
