The SMBJ140CA is a high performance, unidirectional, bi-directional, and ultra-fast, Surface-Mount Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) device designed for general purpose protection applications. This device is designed to protect sensitive electronics from surges due to electrostatic discharge, electrical transients, and lightning. This device is part of the SMBJ series of TVS devices, developed by Littelfuse, one of the industry\'s leading providers of circuit protection solutions.The SMBJ140CA is a combination of a diode and a junction field-effect transistor, designed to protect sensitive electrical components from excessive voltage transients. This device has an active junction barrier (a zener diode) which can conduct in either direction, allowing it to absorb voltage spikes from either direction. When exposed to high voltage, the device will enter a breakdown mode and avalanche by redirecting the excess voltage away from the protected device. The SMBJ140CA can also handle higher peak pulse current than a typical diode, allowing it to protect against higher voltage spikes.This device has three different operating modes: Breakdown mode, Blocking mode and Zener mode. In Breakdown mode, the forward conducting voltage, or VF, is triggered by an externally applied voltage. This mode is used to protect against surges caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD). In Blocking mode, the SMBJ140CA becomes a simple diode, blocking voltage in one direction. This mode is used to protect against overvoltage transients caused by power or inductive transients. Finally, the Zener mode is used to protect against high voltage spikes from lightning strikes or AC/DC overvoltages.The device also has several features such as ESD protection, overvoltage protection, high surge current capability, and low leakage current. It also has a Grade A diode, which has an increased ESD threshold as compared to lower grade diodes. The device has a maximum peak pulse power rating of 10W and a maximum operating junction temperature of 150°C.The SMBJ140CA is an ideal addition to any circuit protection solution. Its diverse operating modes allow it to protect against multiple sources of voltage transients, while its low leakage current ensures that the device doesn\'t interfere with the operation of the protected device. With its built-in Grade A diode, it provides enhanced protection against ESD as well.
