The SMBJ150A TVS-Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppressors - Diodes) is a two-terminal semiconductor device specifically designed to protect sensitive electronic components from high-voltage transients. This device can absorb an energy of up to 1.5 joule, therefore it is suitable for applications that require protection from spikes and surges.

The SMBJ150A is available in two case styles, DO-214AC (SMB) and DO-214AB (SMBL). The SMB version is a through-hole component with two solder mounting holes and the SMBL is a surface-mount component. The device offers bidirectional protection and can withstand reverse voltages up to 150 volts. The SMBJ150A has a low turn-on voltage, fast response time, and excellent clamping capability.

The SMBJ150A is most commonly found in communication and power systems, automotive and consumer electronics, medical and industrial applications, and any other system in which voltage spikes may be present. It can be used to protect against voltage transients caused by electrical noise, power cross, load dump, inductive switching events, and lightning. It is important to note that the SMBJ150A can only provide transient voltage protection; it cannot replace fuse or crowbar protection.

As with most TVS-Diodes, the SMBJ150A is composed of two parts: a Zener diode and a junction transistor. The Zener diode absorbs the voltage transient and reduces it to a level that is safe for the protected equipment. The junction transistor is connected between the Zener diode and ground, and it acts as a current limiter. When the voltage transient tries to pass through the Zener diode, the transistor acts as a clamping device and limits the current that rises from the transient.

The SMBJ150A has a power rating of 500 watts at a peak pulse current of 6.2 amps. It can handle repetitive peak off-state voltages up to 305 volts, and repetitive peak on-state voltages up to 140 volts. The breakdown voltage range of this device is 107-155 volts, and it can tolerate peak pulse currents up to 18.1 amps. The clamping voltage of this device is tremendously low at 11.4 volts.

The SMBJ150A is also RoHS compliant and UL listed. It is a cost-effective alternative to other protection components and offers excellent transient protection for a wide variety of applications.
