The SMBJ17A is a transient voltage suppressor diode that is widely used to protect electronic components from overvoltage transients, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical surges. The SMBJ17A has a peak pulse power rating of 600 watts and offers superior clamping capability and clamping efficiency. It is available in a variety of surface mount packages including MicroMELF, mini-MELF, SOT-23, SMB, SMC, and DO-214AA.

The SMBJ17A is based on a new technology called MOV-based transient voltage suppression. MOVs, or Metal Oxide Varistors, are a type of zener diode with a special structure composed of two type of metal oxide layers. The top layer usually consists of zinc oxide or cadmium oxide is electroded and forms the two electrodes of the varistor. The bottom layer may consist of nickel oxide, which serves as the "dielectric" layer that insulates the two metal oxides and provides the voltage breakdown property. When an overvoltage transient occurs, the voltage across the varistor increases above the breakdown voltage of the metal oxide layers, which causes them to become conductive, effectively shorting out the transient quickly.

Due to its excellent performance in protecting components from ESD and electrical surges, the SMBJ17A can be used in a variety of applications in consumer, industrial, and automotive electronics. For example, it can be used in portable electronic devices, such as cell phones and tablet computers, to protect data and components from electrical surges from nearby wireless communication towers. It can also be used in DC power supplies and motor control circuits in automotive electronics to protect the sensitive electronics from voltage transients caused by current spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system.

The SMBJ17A’s working principle is fairly simple. When an overvoltage transient passes through it, the metal oxide layers breakdown and the voltage is clamped quickly to protect the device. The time that the SMBJ17A takes to clamp the voltage is dependent on the surge rating of the device. A higher surge rating will provide better protection as the device can withstand greater voltage transients before it reaches its breakdown voltage.
