The SMBJ440 is a TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode. It is specifically designed to protect devices from overvoltage transients. By using a diode with the appropriate breakdown voltage rating, surges on the power supply line from external sources can be prevented from damaging sensitive components. The SMBJ440 is designed to protect against remarkably high levels of voltage transients, offering connection lines protection up to 440 V peak.

The SMBJ440 comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Common shapes include SMA, SMB, SMC, and DO-214AC packages. As for size, SMBJ440 diodes can range from 1 Amp current ratings all the way up to 5A with various clamping voltages. Generally, they are all available with unidirectional (asymmetric) characteristics, though bidirectional types are also available.

In addition to its ability to provide transient overvoltage protection, the SMBJ440 also provides reverse polarity protection by allowing a biasing current to flow in the direction known as reverse biased. This provides a shield between the protected device and the overvoltage spikes that could cause catastrophic damage.

The diode’s working principle is based on its junction characteristics: a depletion layer is created at the junction between the pn-region. This depletion layer creates an insulation layer between the p and n regions, so that the current conducted in the device will be determined by the voltage across the depletion layer. When the voltage across the junction exceeds the breakdown voltage, an avalanche breakdown process occurs. During this process, a large current will be conducted through the device, thus providing protection against overvoltages.

SMBJ440 diodes are most commonly used in applications where overvoltages protection is needed, such as power supplies, data lines, automotive systems, and communications networks. In these applications, the diode is placed between two terminals to protect the device from external transients. The diode works in such a way that, when a transient voltage rises above the rated breakdown voltage, the diode starts conducting high current, thus allowing the current to dissipate and absorbing the energy from the transient.

The SMBJ440 offers an effective solution for protecting sensitive electronic components from overvoltage spikes. The diode’s junction characteristics allow it to respond quickly to transient voltages, thus providing a reliable overvoltage protection. In addition, its reverse polarity protection prevents catastrophic damage by preventing overvoltage from entering into the protected device.
