The SMBJ4734CE3/TR13 is a Zener single diode designed to provide protection against electrical transients in a variety of applications. It is designed to break at reverse breakdown voltage of 41V and is ideal for use as an avalanche breakdown diode. It is rated for continuous operation at up to 6.5A and a maximum volts of 53V.
The diode operates by applying a positive bias (forward bias) across the diode junction. This forces the free electrons available in the n-type silicon to move towards the positive terminal. If a negative voltage (reverse bias) is applied, the electrons in the n-type silicon are repelled away from the positive terminal and are attracted towards the negative terminal. As a result, a potential barrier is created between the two terminals, which restricts the current flow. In normal operating conditions, the voltage across the junction will be limited to the forward voltage of the diode.
When the reverse bias applied reaches the breakdown voltage of the diode, the potential barrier will break down, allowing a high current to flow through the diode. Because the current flow reaches a solidly saturating condition in a very short period of time, the Zener is well suited for protecting sensitive components by clamping the voltage at a constant level. The Zener diode works by conducting current from the negative terminal when the voltage across the junction reaches the breakdown voltage.
The SMBJ4734CE3/TR13 has peak pulse current capability of up to 6.5A and can handle up to 200W surge power. It is designed to withstand repetitive reverse biased avalanche energy up to 1W and its rugged construction make it suitable for use in harsh industrial and automotive applications. The diode is designed to break down at 41V and to maintain a reverse voltage of 38V below this level. The maximum forward voltage is up to 0.8V.
