TVS or Transient Voltage Suppressors are unidirectional electronics components working on the principle of Zener diodes. The SMBJ48A-13-F is a specially designed Transient Voltage Suppressor. TVS diodes have a built-in clamping which protects sensitive electronic equipment from short-term power surges.The SMBJ48A-13-F is a bi-directional TVS Diode from Eaton Corporation. It is designed for ESD and surge protection in communications, consumer electronics, automotive applications, and other equipment. This device is made with a breakdown voltage rating of 13 Volts and an operating voltage rating of 6.2 Volts. The peak surge current value is 48 Amps.The SMBJ48A-13-F TVS can be chipped with a reverse polarity with a maximum voltage rating of 20 Volts and a maximum Power Dissipation of 175 W. This device has a 10% tolerance on its breakdown voltage. The maximum Clamping Voltage for the SMBJ48A-13-F TVS diode is 18.4 Volts.Its working principle can be understood with the help of an example. Suppose, an applied voltage of 15 V is given to the device from the power line, this voltage is below the breakdown voltage and the current is able to go through the device.In a power surge situation, the same voltage of 15V, which was earlier below the breakdown voltage, rises to 30V, it reaches the breakdown voltage and the current is not able to pass through the device. This is when the device shuts down and the sensitive equipment is protected from the surge.The SMBJ48A-13-F TVS comes in a 0.093 inch by 0.071 inch package and offers up to 50 Joules of ESD protection. It is able to function in a temperature range of -55°C to 125°C. It has a current leakage of less than 0.1 nA and a capacitance of 20 pF.
