The SMBJ51A Series of Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes provide outstanding protection against voltage transients induced by lightning and other causes. These devices are designed to protect voltage sensitive components from damage or latch-up due to excessive voltage spikes, and are suitable for a wide range of applications.

The SMBJ51A series consists of a hermetically sealed, high-efficiency, surface-mount, low-capacitance TVS diode designed to meet the requirements of MIL-STD-19500 and IEC 61000-4. This series is available in both unidirectional and bidirectional formulations with a working voltage range from 5.0 volts to 39.0 volts.

The SMBJ51A series offers a low clamping voltage and low dynamic resistance to ensure superior clamping performance and low clamping losses. The low capacitance allows operation up to 5GHz with minimal impact to data signals. The low parts count and easy mounting provide time-saving installation and cost savings. The wide operating temperature range combined with high peak surge capability makes the SMBJ51A series suitable for numerous commercial and industrial applications.

The working principle of the SMBJ51A series is based on three major parameters: breakover voltage, peak pulse power, and forward voltage. Breakover voltage is the voltage at which the device starts to conduct. Once the breakdown voltage is reached, peak power starts to peak and the diode conducts a current. At the same time, the forward voltage starts to drop as the current increases; eventually the voltage reaches a minimum level and the current is limited. The device is designed to protect circuits against transients that exceed the maximum breakover voltage and provide a low capacitance protection solution.

The primary applications for the SMBJ51A series are communication, data/telecommunication, storage, industrial control, and automotive electronics and test equipment. These devices are useful for protecting sensitive circuits from voltage transients due to lightning, power cycling, electrostatic discharge, and other causes.
