Working Principle
The SMBJ5379A/TR13 Zener Diode works on the principle of reverse-biased Zener breakdown where the reverse current rises exponentially with increasing voltage. The Zener voltage (Vz) is the breakdown voltage at which the reverse current reaches the maximum. When the reverse voltage reaches the breakdown voltage, current is sharply increased and the diode begins to conduct in reverse. This peak current continues until the voltage is greater than the Vz and after that, the current reduces.
The diode can be used as a voltage-limiting device, restricting a certain overvoltage from reaching the other components. As the Zener voltage (Vz) is fixed for a given component, the voltage won’t increase over the breakdown voltage and so, the device won’t suffer any damage.
The Zener voltage of the diode can also be increased by connecting it in series with a resistor. Using this setup, the resistor limits the current and the diode provides a higher Zener voltage. This principle is employed in circuits to obtain greater Voltage Regulation (VR), which is the difference between the no-load voltage and the voltage that is supplied across the load.
