The SMBJ6V5CA functions by quickly diverting or suppressing the transient current and voltage away from sensitive components or systems. It is a re-flow solderable, epoxy-free device. Its working principle can be explained as follows.When the peak voltage of the transient exceeds the maximum working voltage of the device (6.5 volts) or exceeds some other threshold voltage, the SMBJ6V5CA will start conducting. This will create a low-impedance path for the excess voltage, allowing it to be diverted away from the protected components. As the transient current travels through the diode, the internal p-n junction quickly warms up, and releases excess charge carriers into the surrounding area. This helps to dissipate the energy of the transient voltage, thus preventing the protected components from experiencing any undue stress. The SMBJ6V5CA also features a temperature coefficient of reverse leakage current of no less than -22 ± 2mV/°C over its operating temperature range.
