TVS - Diodes: SMBJ75A-13-F Application Field and Working Principle

Working Principle

When there is an overvoltage or over current, SMBJ75A-13-F will quickly reduce the voltage to within the allowable voltage range. The working principle of SMBJ75A-13-F is identical to the regular PN junction diode. The major difference lies in the reverse breakover voltage, which is the limit voltage of PN junction diode. The voltage of SMBJ75A-13-F is much higher than the normal PN junction diode and can tolerate a high amount of voltage and current.

When the voltage applied to the anode or the cathode of SMBJ75A-13-F exceeds the peak pulse power rating, the device is turned on and starts conducting current. This allows the excess voltage or current to be reduced to a safe level before the devices reach their peak pulse current or voltage rating.

When the over-voltage or over-current condition ends, the SMBJ75A-13-F device will instantly turn off and stop conducting current. This helps to keep the voltage and current below the peak pulse power ratings and protect the devices from any kind of transient electrical conditions.
