A Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diode, such as the SMBJ75A-TP, is an active component used to protect circuits from potential overvoltage situations. Commonly, TVS diodes are used to protect microcircuits, integrated circuits, unprotected and unprotected signal lines or accompanying connectors from transients such as overvoltages caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD) and inductive switching. By limiting the voltage to a safe level, TVS diodes effectively provide protection against transient voltage surges while enabling normal and proper circuit operation at normal supply conditions.

The SMBJ75A-TP is a silicon epitaxial planar TVS diode rated with a 5 Watt power dissipation and designed to protect components against ESD and inductive switching transients. With a peak pulse current of 500A, the SMBJ75A-TP is designed for applications with a required peak surge capability greater than a low or medium power TVS diode.

The working principle of the SMBJ75A-TP TVS diode is based on a nonlinear threshold voltage. When the voltage across its two leads exceeds the threshold, as when encountering a transient surge, the diode turns on and begins to conduct current. This creates a low-impedance path, dissipating the energy of the transient surge before it reaches thesystems protected.

When the voltage drops again below the threshold, the diode turns off and the system is protected against the transient surge. This prevents the transient surge from entering circuits downstream and damaging interconnected components and systems.

It is important to note that the peak surge voltage capability of the SMBJ75A-TP TVS diode is not limited to one value. The voltage protection capability is specified with typical 3kA and 8/20µs peak pulse, with values up to 4.5kA at very short pulses of 100nS. Additionally, the TVS diode can support ambient temperatures ranging from -65°C to +150°C.

The SMBJ75A-TP TVS diode can be used in a variety automotive applications such as automotive navigation systems, car emergency calls, telematics systems, and Bluetooth. It can also be used in other applications with similar required voltage protection and energy specifications, such as industrial control systems and communication systems. Additionally, it can be used in high energy input DC-DC converters, high current DC line protection, and noise suppression.
