SMC30J15CA is a uni-directional, low-capacitance, low clamping voltage, unidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage transients caused by inductive switching, or lighting. It is specifically designed to reduce EMI/RFI emissions.
Application Field
SMC30J15CA is designed for high speed digital devices, such as telecom, datacom, computer and consumer communication systems. It is suitable for high speed ESD protection as well as other high voltage transient protections due to its low clamping voltage. It also provides low capacitance, fast recovery time, overcurrent protection and lightning protection.
Working Principle
SMC30J15CA can regulate the voltage that exceeds the specified working voltage of the protected circuit and providing protection against static discharges. The diode works on an avalanche breakdown principle. The diode conducts current when the reverse bias exceeds the avalanche breakdown voltage. This reverse bias breakdown voltage is known as clamping voltage. The diode behaves like a resistance in series with a capacitor and forms a shunt-clipper configuration. The diode works similarly to a zener diode, but a TVS diode can handle much higher surge currents than an equivalent zener diode.
When the voltage across the TVS diode exceeds the breakdown voltage, the diode quickly dissipates the energy from the surge current, soaking it up and clamping the voltage. The magnitude of the clamping voltage of the diode is proportional to the surge voltage. The diode allows the current to pass through quickly and then quickly shuts off after the surge event. This helps the device to become regenerative even after a surge event. The diode also helps to reduce the EMI/RFI emissions by absorbing it and limiting the transient voltages.
The SMC30J15CA diode also has a low capacitance feature, which is the capacitance between the diode’s anode and cathode pins. The low capacitance ensures that the electrical signals remain clean with minimal distortion during transient events. This helps to provide improved signal integrity and reduces signal interference from external sources.
