Transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes play an important role in the circuit for protecting against surge overvoltage transients. In the applications, SMCJ12-E3/9AT is a multi-functional bidirectional zener diode array and is designed to safely absorb transients in a wide variety of environments. As a commercial-grade rated device, it is primarily used for professional electronics products, computer & peripherals, automotive electronics, and industrial & telecom equipment applications.

The SMCJ12-E3/9AT consists of nine individual Zener Diodes with breakdown voltages of 24, 26, 28, 30, 33, 36, 39, 43, and 47 V that are arranged in a symmetric array designed to clamp overvoltage transients from either polarity of the transient. The Zener Diodes paired with eight series transistors in the device enable it to bidirectionally absorb overvoltage transients and hold its maximum voltage rating of ±12.0 V. For instance, when an impulse with peak voltage equals to and opposite of the device’s maximum peak power (Ipp) rating is applied, the device can effectively clamp and dissipate the surge energy.

The SMCJ12-E3/9AT can be maintained within its operating temperature limits between −55 °C and +150 °C. Compared to the normal Zener diodes, this device has a lower dynamic resistance to be less susceptible to thermal runaway. In addition, it features a typical power dissipation of 550 mW and fast travelling time of 5 ns.

The working principle of SMCJ12-E3/9AT is simple. When the voltage polarity and amplitude of a surge transient exceed the voltage rating of the device, the Zener Diodes in the device turn on and create a voltage drop across the Zener Diodes; the drop is equal to the breakdown voltage of the Zener Diodes, which would be 29 V or lower. In this way, the maximum voltage rating of the device is properly maintained and the power dissipated (which is equal to the voltage drop times the current) is released as heat.

Four mounting pad options are offered by the SMCJ12-E3/9AT. These mounting pad options include a conventional glass epoxy leaded package, a SIPLACE™ package with clamping screws for mechanical strength, a surface mount package with tape and reel, and an insulating material connection package with flanges for direct connection to high voltage lines.

The SMCJ12-E3/9AT is an ideal choice for protecting circuitry against voltage transients. It provides features such as bi-directional protection, low dynamic resistance, professional grade ratings, wide operating temperature range, fast response time, and four mount options.
