The SMCJ12CATR is an unidirectional, low-capacitance bi-directional TVS diode designed to protect sensitive electronics in automated test equipment, industrial equipment, networking equipment, telecom equipment and many other applications against Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients and low-level surges. It is designed to protect sensitive static sensitive components from damage and to provide an extra level of protection against damage due to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD events) of up to 6KV (Human Body Model).The SMCJ12CATR offers fast response times ensuring that the device can protect any sensitive components in the circuit from any transient overvoltage spikes. With low value of dynamic resistance and low capacitance, this device also offers excellent clamping capabilities even when used in high frequency applications.The SMCJ12CATR is constructed using two diodes with a bidirectional circuit that gives it an unidirectional clamping action. The two diodes in the device are connected in series to form an asymmetric clamping network and are configured to provide a low clamping voltage. This low clamping voltage is the key feature of the SMCJ12CATR allowing it to have a much lower clamping voltage than the higher-clamping voltage of typical ESD protection silicon diodes.The working principle of SMCJ12CATR is based on the characteristic that any transient voltages applied across the device will cause the two diodes to forward-bias and the two diodes to be connected in series. As the voltage increases, the forward-bias current increases, which causes the circuit impedance to decrease. The decreased impedance ensures a rapid transfer of the transient voltage to ground, thus providing effective protection to the sensitive components.The application fields of SMCJ12CATR includes industrial equipment, medical instrumentation, automotive electronics, consumer electronics, signal processing, and telecommunications.
