TVS diodes, or transient voltage suppressors, are a type of semiconductor device mainly used for protecting electrical and electronic devices against electrical transients, which could potentially damage or disrupt normal functioning. The SMCJ16A-13-Fis a type of TVS diode, mainly used for protecting AC mains and telecom line cards from overvoltage transients caused by EFT, ESD and lightning.The SMCJ16A-13-F TVS diode is housed in a low profile SOD-323 surface mount package. The device features an unidirectional polarity, with the anode connected to the ‘-’ pin on the diode. The diode is rated for a peak pulse power of 600W for 8/20μs when the temperature is 25℃ and a peak clamping voltage of 14.3V when tested with an 8/20μs waveform. The maximum peak forward current is 500A, while the maximum forward voltage is 1.05V.A primary application field for the SMCJ16A-13-F is the protection of AC mains and telecom line cards from transients caused by high-energy users, such as lightning or electrostatic discharge (ESD). This is due to its low-profile SOD-323 surface mount package, which is capable of dissipating a high amount of power due to its efficient heat conduction. The SMCJ16A-13-F can also be used as part of a low-cost transient voltage protection circuit, which utilizes a TVS diode in order to provide overvoltage protection and help suppress an ESD/EFT event.
