Working Principle

The SMCJ16AE3/TR13 is a bidirectional protection diode designed to protect against transients such as electrostatic discharge (ESD) and surge events. The diode features a low forward voltage drop which allows it to remain in a reverse breakdown state until the transient voltage is higher than the diode’s breakdown voltage. In this state, the diode blocks the transient current. When the transient voltage dissipates, the diode will resume its reverse breakdown state.

When the transient voltage is lower than the diode’s reverse breakdown voltage, the diode will allow current to flow. In this state, the diode will clamp the voltage and prevent it from exceeding its reverse breakdown voltage, protecting the electronics from overvoltage.
