TVS - Diodes are used in a wide range of applications, including the protection of valuable electronic equipment against electrostatic discharge, surge pulses, and overvoltage transients. The SMCJ16CATR is a 1500W peak pulse power P6SMBJ16CA surface mount Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) Diode designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage transients induced by lightning, electrostatic discharge and other caused coupled electrical surges.

The SMCJ16CATR operates by limiting the transient voltage by combining a diode, the component most suited to snub unwarranted transients, with an avalanche characteristic designed to minimize clamping voltage in response to surge currents. Due to its small body size, SMCJ16CATR can be used in a number of space-sensitive applications. It also offers superior clamping capabilities as compared to its predecessor SMBJ14CA. The distinguished features of SMCJ16CATR make it an ideal diode for transient voltage suppression.

The SMCJ16CATR features an Ultra low operating stand-off voltage at 16V and a rated clamping voltage of 25.3V. This peak surge protection makes it suitable for multiple applications like, DSC, Mobile phones, PDA’s, WiFi, medical devices, AC/DC power supplies, computer equipment, consumer electronics, audio/video, telecommunication, automotive and aviation. SMCJ16CATR have very high peak pulse power of 1500W at 10/1000μs while the maximum average power is 237W at 25oC.

The working principle of the SMCJ16CATR is based on the avalanche breakdown phenomenon of a P-N junction (reverse direction breakdown voltage). When the junction is exposed to a relatively high voltage or current, the PN Junction breaks down and the flow of current becomes very high. The reverse current also depends on diode’s reverse voltage capability. When the TVS diode is triggered, it acts like a short-circuit and provides a low impedance path to the transient current, shunting it away from the equipment, and helping reduce the chances of it getting damaged. The TVS-diode can provide protection up to the peak pulse power specified as reverse leakage current, in the nanoseconds, does not impede normal operation of the circuit.

The SMCJ16CATR also has a very fast response time, which is measured as the delay time from the moment when the voltage exceeds the transient voltage level and the voltage returns to its normal level. The response time of the SMCJ16CATR is very fast which helps to protect the circuit or device from damage. It also provides a low off-state leakage current, which helps the device to work normally and prevents unnecessary power consumption while the device is in the off-state.
