SMCJ24ATR Application Field and Working Principle
Silicon Medical Circuitry’s SMCJ24ATR TVS diode offers dual-channel lightning and surge protection for data and power lines with a low 6V clamping voltage. This breakdown voltage is low enough to protect drivers and receivers in the 5V logic circuits used in household and Industry 4.0 automation and control systems. With reverse stand-off voltage of 24V, the SMCJ24ATR can also protect lower voltage systems.

SMCJ24ATR Application Field
The SMCJ24ATR is a high-performance transient voltage suppressor, providing bi-directional protection for data communication and power, and able to prevent intermittent and permanent device damage.
This device is particularly suited to 5V logic circuits in automation and control systems, especially those in Industry 4.0 applications, where power surges, inductive spikes, ESD, and EMI interference are expected to occur on a regular basis. The low 6V clamping voltage of the SMCJ24ATR is ideal for protecting drivers and receivers in 5V logic circuits.
It can also be used in 3V3 and 2V5 logic systems, as it has a reverse stand-off voltage of 24V. It is suitable for use on high-speed data lines such as USB, LVDS, HDMI, DVI, Ethernet, and Serial ATA.
SMCJ24ATR Working Principle
The SMCJ24ATR provides surge protection in two ways. Firstly, it clamps and dissipates transient spikes or inductive surges. Secondly, it blocks any voltages that exceed the breakdown voltage (6V for the SMCJ24ATR).
The way a TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diode works is by using a Zener diode and a protective resistor inside a three-terminal package. When a transient voltage spike exceeds the breakdown voltage (6V for the SMCJ24ATR), the Zener diode conducts, allowing a limited current to flow through the protective resistor and the Zener diode. This clamps the overvoltage, protects the circuit, and dissipates any excess energy as heat. If the voltage spike exceeds 6V, the Zener diode will block it, preventing further damage to the circuit.
The SMCJ24ATR is designed to protect data communication circuits and power systems against surges of up to 30A (8/20μs impulse current). It is RoHS compliant, and has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.
The SMCJ24ATR is a high-performance TVS diode which provides effective protection to 5V logic circuits.
