The SMCJ28E3/TR13 is a bidirectional single line low-capacitance transient-voltage-suppression diode. It is mainly used for the protection of the equipment from the transient overvoltage and ESD. The device is designed to provide a very fast response time along with a low operating capacitance of 28pF.
As a diode, the primary working principle of the SMCJ28E3/TR13 is that it acts as a switch, meaning it can pass the current in either direction across the circuit, or acts as a short circuit when the undesired transient voltage occurs. It is made of a semiconductor material as the junction of two different type materials, one is P material (positive) and another one is N material (negative). If the polarity is given to the P pole, the electrons are attracted to the p material and hence the diode is in ON state, and when the opposite polarity is given to the P material, the electrons are repelled and the diode is in OFF state.
The application field of the SMCJ28E3/TR13 mainly includes industrial, automotive and consumer applications. It is capable to suppress very fast transients with a peak pulse power rating of 600 W at 10/1000 µs. It can also work at a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to +150°C. Due to its wide temperature range, the SMCJ28E3/TR13 is used in communication systems, instrumentation and vehicle control systems to protect against overvoltage transients. Also, it is used in industrial-control circuits, I/O circuits and power lines.
