Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes provide protection against voltage spikes and transients that can otherwise cause electrical breakdown, resulting in product damage and potentially a safety hazard. The SMCJ400 is a member of the TVS diode family. It is suitable for protecting sensitive devices against electromechanical surge damage, typically associated with the operation of inductive and relays.

The SMCJ400 is designed primarily to protect against voltage transients produced by electrostatic discharge (ESD) stress or lightning. It provides effective protection against negative over-voltage transients. This protection capability is enhanced by the integrated reverse polarity robust junction. The SMCJ400 is designed to be robust to operate consistently at high working temperatures, up to 175 oC. It is available in a variety of packages, from the conventional DO-214 to the land grid array and surface mount packages.

The working principle of the SMCJ400 is the same as any other TVS diode. It works by clamping the voltage between the anode and the cathode by rapidly switching the diode across the PN junction at the start of an over-voltage event. The forward voltage of the diode is reduced to the rated breakdown voltage (VRM) when the reverse voltage VESD (electrostatic discharge) reaches the rated value. The SMCJ400 will then conduct current in the reverse direction, limiting the voltage to the rated breakdown voltage until the over-voltage event is finished.

The SMCJ400 is ideal for use in automotive applications, such as engine control modules and fuel pumps, where the environment is often exposed to electromagnetic interference (EMI) or high electrical noise. It is also well suited for industrial and consumer applications such as computer peripherals and printers where the standard remains a higher level of protection than what is available with a conventional zener diode.

The SMCJ400 is also suitable for use in industrial and medical applications, providing an integrated level of protection from both ESD and overvoltage transients. This is thanks to its DC breakover and clamping capabilities, and integrated radial kickback element. For example, in medical devices, it can be used to protect against electrocardiograms spikes or spikes generated by the patient through contact with an electrode. This is especially important when using patient-controlled medical implants.

The SMCJ400 is a desirable choice in many applications as it integrates radial kickback and ESD into one component. This makes the design process easier and simplifies the selection process. Additionally, the design of the SMCJ400 allows it to be used in harsh environments such as those found in the automotive industry.
