TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are nowadays the most effective way to protect a wide variety of electrical, communication, and automotive systems against overvoltage and electrostatic discharge (ESD). Among them is the SMCJ48CA-TR. The TVS diodes are designed to absorb or dissipate very high surge currents and spike voltage safely and efficiently without allowing them to reach sensitive parts of the system.
The SMCJ48CA-TR is a common Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode capable of protecting against a wide range of overvoltage and ESD threats. It is a 48V non-polar, fast-acting bi-directional diode that effectively absorbs transient voltage spikes up to 34A and ESD pulses up to the maximum internationally-recognized rating of 15kV. The diode provides coverage for both high-energy overvoltage applications and high-power overvoltage applications, making it ideal for many industrial applications.
The SMCJ48CA-TR is designed to protect both input and output circuits from voltages above the rated VBR (Breakdown Voltage). During normal operation, the diode shows very low leakage, allowing it to remain in “on” state. When an overvoltage condition occurs, the junction breaks down and the diode transitions to its “off” state. The breakdown voltage (VBR) typically ranges from 6V to 48V with a 5V, 6V, 14V, 21V, and 40V being the most common values.
When the SMCJ48CA-TR is subjected to a high-voltage transient, it begins conducting in a very short time (typically less than 1 nanosecond). The surge current helps to dissipate and protect the circuit. The diode begins blocking when the transient dissipates. This provides a noise suppression path for the high-frequency transient, preventing it from reaching sensitive parts. As the diode is reverse-biased, its lower tolerance to voltage helps prevent any further transients.
The SMCJ48CA-TR is an ideal solution to ESD protection with its ultra-low clamping voltage. It is capable of supporting multiple high-energy pulses, making it suitable for both high-energy and high-power applications. The TVS diode also has low capacitance to minimize noise interference, showing exceptional surge protection even in high-density, noise-sensitive environments. The low temperature coefficient further guarantees that the clamping voltage remains consistent under different temperatures.
