TVS - Diodes are electrical protection devices used in various applications to protect electronic components from damage caused by high voltage transients. These devices work by providing a high discharge capacity before or during an overvoltage event and regularly are used in systems which are exposed to power line surges or transients caused by lightning strikes. The SMCJ58A-M3/9AT is a unidirectional standard TVS-diode specifically designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment against damages caused by transients. It possesses a wide operating range of 5.0 to 170 volts, very low leakage current (100nA at 5V) and is capable of dissipating up to 9A peak pulse current.

The device also has a low clamping voltage, which is the voltage at which the device begins to conduct current and limits the possible overvoltage to a certain level. The clamping voltage of SMCJ58A-M3/9AT is 25.2 V for a protective current of 8A.
