TVS - Diodes
Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes are non-linear devices that protect electronics from destructive voltage transients caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD). For this purpose, they quickly react to high voltage transients and selectively bypass the device and its supply under surge conditions. In addition to ESD protection, TVS diodes can be used for suppression of inductive and capacitive switching transients, commonly referred to as “transient glitches”.
SMCJ6.5CA-TP is one such TVS diode. It is a RoHS compliant, 3-pin (two leads and one tab) DPAK, 2.8x2.8 mm SMD package designed for use in automotive and portable consumer and communication equipment. It comes with a peak pulse power rating of 600W, an unidirectional (bidirectional with isolated tab) ESD protected port with an operating voltage up to 6.5V, breakdown voltage of 8.6V, and a peak pulse surge protection of 28A per line.
The SMCJ6.5CA-TP diode works on the principle of avalanche breakdown. At higher reverse leakage current, the impact ionization process takes place, allowing current to move significantly high and induce the breakdown mechanism, and then junction resistance before the current reaches its peak point. This process is referred to as avalanche breakdown. The SMCJ6.5CA-TP diode is also designed to minimize the current inversion transient in multiplexers and low-noise analog signal circuits.
With a wide 5V to 6.5V operating voltage range, the SMCJ6.5CA-TP diode is suitable for a variety of applications including automotive, industrial, consumer and medical systems, as well as telecommunications. Typical applications for this TVS diode include Lightning Protection, ESD protection, Over-voltage protection, and Surge protection.
The SMCJ6.5CA-TP diode is built with integrated P/N junction controlled by an external PIN access which is used to control the reverse breakdown voltage. This diode is also precision matched for design with ultra-low capacitance, suitable for high-speed signal data interfaces such as USB. It features a peak power dissipation of 600W and bi-directional ESD protection.
The SMCJ6.5CA-TP diode is a fast acting device with low clamping voltage which is suitable for transients up to 28A peak pulse. This diode works very effectively on ESD protection, withstanding voltage spikes up to 8.6V. It exhibits excellent ESD protection characteristics with low capacitance and $<1$pF on port to port. The SMCJ6.5CA-TP diode is also designed for reverse voltage protection with its large reverse blocking voltage.
